Facial Rejuvantion Nonsurgical Injectable fillers
If an older face is like a raisin, then the latest idea in cosmetic anti-aging medicine is to plump it back to a grape with injectable fillers.
So much for aging like fine wine.
"Now it's about replacing loss of volume," says Dr. Gary Monheit, president of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. "Filling material is the new frontier for facial aging."
"Old age is a volume-loss issue," says Dr. Patricia Wexler, professor at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. "Look at the full cheeks of a child. Over time, you go from convex to flat because of fat wasting in the aging face."
Fillers are injected to enhance volume. They can re-contour the face, diminish wrinkles and fill in depressed areas. Fillers, many with the consistency of a gel, are made of human and bovine collagen, hyaluronic acid, or one's own fat. They're injected using a small needle.
Most injection sessions take 15 minutes to one hour and are done at a doctor's office under local anesthesia. Semi-permanent or permanent fillers may require more than one treatment to achieve good results.
And results can vary, not only with the type of filler you use, but also with the physician.
Wexler, who stresses that the skill of the person administering the product is more important than the product itself, says, "It's not the filler, it's the filler."
